Kashgar, China

Thursday, Mar 27, 2008Personal

Starting in 2001 I spent a few years working in China documenting some very interesting stories. One of my most memorable places to visit was a place called Kashgar in Western China. It was very shortly after the war in Afghanistan had started in late 2001 and I decided to document the daily lives of the Uyghurs of Western China. The Uyghurs are a muslim minority that live in Xinjiang Provence. It is similar to Tibet where the Uyghurs are also calling for more autonomy or even full independence away from China. I had heard that the majority of the locals were Muslim and had very traditional lives hardly touched by the wealth of Eastern China or Western influences. It was like going back in time roaming around the mud bricked houses and visiting the very chaotic sunday market where young boys would test ride horses around the market compound.

I have just been asked to submit a portfolio of images for a series of portraits of land workers that a national gallery wish to commission. I love these kind of projects so I have decided to submit some images from my Kashgar project. This set of images won me a World Press Photo in 2002 and FCC Hong Kong Photographer of the Year 2001. You can see more images from this project and a couple of others on my editorial website here. I thought some of the readers of this blog would be interested in seeing my other work. Wish me luck for the commission!!!

Another WPJA Placing

Friday, Mar 7, 2008Weddings

Some great news today. We came eighth overall in the last quarter of the WPJA competition. We are delighted here at the studio!! Andy and I have started a competition amongst ourselves to see what awards we can win during 2008...we have not yet sorted out the prize for the end of the year......

The first image was from a fantastic wedding near Limoges, France. Being based in Jersey is great as the French mainland is just 15 miles away and an excellent gateway to some stunning locations in Europe.

This was from one of our winter weddings, which we really love doing. This image really reinforces why I only cover weddings as a photojournalist. I want the couple, when they see this image, to be taken back to that moment and to remember their feelings and thoughts.

This was a fantastic environmental picture of the couple just as they are starting their first dance. You can see the amount of effort that they put into the reception. This couple really understood the importance of getting great imagery from their wedding not just for today but for future generations of their family....I was so delighted that they chose me to document their day!

It has been a crazy few weeks here whilst Andy has been away sunning himself in Brazil. Hopefully he will post some of his images on the blog soon! Carol has been on a shopping trip to New York as well so I have been under pressure in the office without her.....

I am currently looking for a new assistant to help me out during weddings with my equipment, lights etc, The position will mainly be for Saturdays and may involve travel to exotic destinations!!! The applicant must also be based in Jersey which is our base. If anyone is interested please feel free to contact me!!
